Born in Tokyo on 16 June 1971, Akari-Lisa Ishii bears an important name, her mother Motoko Ishii being one of the true pioneer of lighting design all over the world.
After a Master Degree of Fine Arts at the University of Tokyo and the specialization at the École Supérieure de Design Industriel in Paris, she embarked on her career as a lighting designer in the United States, where she worked for Howard Brandston & Partners, in Japan (Motoko Ishii Lighting Design), and in France, where she was project chief designer of the Louis Clair’s studio. Notre Dâme de Paris, the Master Plan in Aix-en-Provence, the Royal Sporting Club in Monaco and a major department store’s icon building in Glasgow are only a few of the projects she took part in as a lighting designer of Light Cibles.
2004 was a defining year for Lisa, who created her lighting design office, I.C.O.N. Inc. (Ishii Conception Office Network). I.C.O.N. is based in an international network in Tokyo and Paris (32, rue de Laborde) in order to expand the new trend of light through many areas of the world with a global viewpoint.
The office has already started its universal activities in Europe such as a world-class exhibition centre and an extraordinary opera play using an entire city as its background. It is also planned to widen its playground to many other areas in the world. This organization covers not only lighting design but also other perspectives around the keyword “Fiat Lux!“: researches on light-cultures, creation & production of art works of light, co-ordination of lighting people from different countries and so on.
Her activities expand to writing articles in many professional magazines such as Professional Lighting Magazine (Germany), Nikkei Design and Shin-Kenchiku (Japan), Lighting & Interior (Korea), Lighting Magazine (United Kingdom) and others.
Akari-Lisa Ishii is an associate member of IALD, ELDA, and ACE, and a lighting consultant authorized by IES Japan.
