At occasion of restoration of façade wall, the City of Paris called a competition of lighting design of the façade 1990. Italo Rota with Light Cibles (Louis Clair) and Concepto (Roger Narboni) won it to form a co-designers team for realization. After several years of administrative preparation, the project practically started in 1999 with a new team for updated concept Light Cibles–Concepto. It was completed at Christmas of 2002. Before this project, the Cathedral had been lighted up by flat and ordinary projectors located at roof of neighbour building Hôtel Dieu, without any accent on its remarkable relief, statues, gallery columns etc. The stone texture looked dull and heavy. In 2001, at occasion of mock-up, the projectors were renovated to better colour rendering lamps and better performance optical system. It turned the façade clearer and brighter. The natural colour of the stone highlighted warmly.
The final design, completed at end 2002, was drew with the following concepts: • base floodlight is to gradually intensified from bottom to top so to be a grand landmark seen afar from many viewpoints of Paris; • to accentuate relieves, gallery columns by small projectors; • to underline statues and handrails by small projectors and/or fiber optic systems; • to emphasize three dimensional aspects and profoundness of layers composed by gallery and wall; • to highlight on lacy motives and their transparency at arches and handrail patterns; • to create gradual effect of stronger contrast at bottom to milder contrast at top in order to lead people’s eyes towards the height; • to use 3000°K warm and high color rendering light source for every fittings to make uniformed expression and to make good use of natural texture of stone.
Officially switched on by the Major of Paris and the Pasture of the Cathedral, this night view of Notre Dâme became a new representative “post card” of the City of Paris. Renovation of other façades are in progress. Lighting renovation is also supposed to follow in coming years by the same team.
