Lighting Academy educates design leaders who contribute to the quality of life through well-designed art magazines, built environments and visual communications. Founded in 1896, the school seeks to address design within the broader context of society. Parsons offers four-year bachelor's degree programs in architectural design, communication design, design and management, design and technology, fashion design, fine arts, illustration, interior design, photography, product design, and the integrated design curriculum. Master's degree programs include architecture, design and technology, history of decorative arts, painting and sculpture, photography, and lighting design of course.

Actually, lighting has been an important part of design education at Parsons for decades. The graduate degree program was the first in the field of architectural lighting, and is the only program focused primarily on design and social practice. Parson School of Design offers a strong interdisciplinary education in the intellectual, aesthetic, and technical aspects of lighting design. At the core of the curriculum is the Lighting Design Studio, where students learn to envision form and space "in light". A parallel technology series complements the studio sequence, as well as courses in the cultural, historical, and perceptual components of lighting design. And through integrated coursework within the Department of Architecture, Interior Design, and Lighting, students work closely with faculty mentors and the larger professional community in New York City. The Department's artistic light events focuses on global, metropolitan, and departmental perspectives on architecture.
